I took a little pause in the travel posts to share those incredible two weddings! But wanted to jump right back in, with Day 3 of our Icelandic adventures. We woke up in the little town of Hof, and headed even further east to see this incredible glacier lagoon. It was one of the top things on my bucket list & I couldn’t wait to get there! We even woke up at 5am to catch it before all of the tourists showed up, in high hopes of a sunrise as well. But man oh man, Mother Nature had some other plans for us!
About 3 kilometers away from our destination, we were hit with a HUGE blizzard. We had four Buffaloians in a SUV, and we still were no match for it. We were miles and miles from civilization with no cell service… so once the snow got so high that we couldn’t see the tires or even the road anymore, we called it & headed back to Skaftafell Park for another hike, this time on the biggest glacier in Iceland, Vatnajokull. All of the sudden, the weather was perfect! Sunny, warm, blue skies. It was explained to us that the weather over the park is always lovely, and is under its own little bubble somehow.
We hiked the glacier for hours and then headed back along the main road to Reykjavik with stops along the way, including the famous black sand beach in Vik, where we were almost blown away. I’ve never experienced wind like this in my life; and we could barely even walk. I truly wish we could have explored that area more because it was absolutely beautiful, but the waves were intense, and we took the warnings seriously (people have been completely swept away, just standing on the beach!) This day was our first taste of the seriousness of the Icelandic conditions. By the end, we really understood that this weather is no joke! But we made it back to the city safe and sound, and just in time for dinner.
